Gail Nohr receives 2024 NWTC Award

2024 NWTC Soaring Recent Alumni Award
Our Co founder Gail Nohr recently received the 2024 NWTC Soaring Recent Alumni Award. A United States Navy veteran, Gail began her career as a Hospital Corpsman, where caring for Vietnam veterans deeply impacted her. She later dedicated 22 years to the United States Postal Service, working alongside many fellow veterans. Her commitment to serving those who have served continued for seven years at the Brown County Veterans Service Office, where she assisted veterans needing housing and essential services.
While working in veteran support services, Gail earned an associate degree in Human Services from NWTC, and a certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling. She then joined the Jackie Nitschke Center as a Substance Abuse Counselor in Training, where she is currently completing the 3,000 hours required for licensure.
Two years ago, following her partner's retirement from homebuilding, Gail co-founded Veterans 1st of NEW Tiny Homes Village, a nonprofit dedicated to providing stable housing and comprehensive support for veterans. The organization is developing a community of 21 small homes alongside a larger Community Center, which will offer 20 vital services, including employment assistance, health and wellness programs, support groups, and community gatherings.
As the on-site Substance Abuse Counselor, Gail will draw on her experience at the Jackie Nitschke Center and her own 17 years in recovery to support veterans struggling with substance use disorder. “Everyone here is so dedicated, and I am learning so much about how to interact with people going through recovery,” she shares.
